  • A late withdrawal meant only fourteen members competed in the Jack Bayliss 4-wood drawn pairs competition. Though the sun shone for much of the time the players had to wrap up well against a very chilly breeze.

The competition was run as two leagues, one of three teams and one of four, playing eight or six ends respectively. In the 4-team league three teams managed two wins and a loss, so shot difference had to be taken into account, which saw Paul Mitchell and Sheila Payne well ahead of Frank Hill and Colin Meadows. In the three-team league a win and a draw gave Ruth Lowe and Rod Payne a clear lead.

The final, scheduled for six ends was extremely close with excellent play from all four competitors. Paul and Sheila started with two singles, but clever conversion shots by Rod developed three shots on the next end to bring he and Ruth into a one shot lead at the halfway point. A two and a single for Paul and Sheila in ends 4 and 5 saw them take a two-shot advantage into the last end. Ruth had two bowls close, but with his third Paul drew the shot - only to unluckily promote one of Ruth's bowls with his last. Rod drew a second shot and with Sheila just missing out Rod had the chance to add a third for the win, but just failed.

With the 'final' score at 5-5 an extra end was required. This started a little scrappily, but Sheila drew a good shot to put the pressure on Rod and added a toucher with her last bowl to give Paul and her two shots for a 7-5 win.
