Newport Ukes

President's & Captain's Day 2019

President Thelma and Captain Kath welcomed members, friends and guests to the Club on Sunday 18 August for a day of fun raising funds for Asbestos Support Central England.

Bowling was on the agenda, with a 'spider' (won by Margaret Cartwright) and Rod Payne's "knock-out" competition. All players started with three bowls, but after every end the bowl furthest from the jack was removed, leaving that player with just two. As the game progressed players lost their bowls (and their marbles in some cases!) until eventually only the winner remained. Four matches give us four winners who then contested a final in the same format. Ladies winner was Liz Caird, who finished third overall, and the men's winner was Quentin Smith, who defeated runner-up Colin Meadows on a tight measure in the final one-bowl shoot-out.

Members and visitors were parted from their cash by a raffle, a tombola and a hand of bingo. A sumptuous buffet was consumed, followed by strawberries (kindly donated by Aldi) and then we were entertained by a sing-along with the Newport Ukes and some humorous songs from our own wandering minstrel, Quentin Smith.

Great fun was had by all and around £285 was raised, plus a further £50 for the Newport Ukes' preferred charity - Blackfriars Academy.
