Due to a spate of late withdrawals only 12 players contested the Jack Bayliss Cup, for 4 wood drawn pairs. The teams were divided into 2 pools so that each team played 2 games. In order to provide a worthwhile amount of bowling, each game was played over 8 ends instead of the normal 6, and this was to prove crucial later in the day.
In the first group, new member Cyril Conley and Paul Mitchell narrowly won their first game against Mike Caird and Chris Doody. In their second game they were 6-0 ahead after 6 ends, but then dropped a 5 and a 4 to lose 9-6 to the 2 Franks (Hill & Beasland). So it all hinged on the last game between the Franks and Mike / Chris, which was a straightforward win for the Franks, putting them into the final with 2 wins from 2 games.
In the second group, Mike Hubbard and Ruth Lowe had been drawn together, and cruised through their first game against Liz Caird & new member Derek Davies by 22-1. Liz & Derek recovered to win their second game, against Frances Hill & Colin Robinson by 1 shot. The final game in this pool was drawn, so Ruth & Mike went through with a win and a draw.
The final was also played over 8 ends. After 4 ends the two Franks led by 6-3, mainly thanks to a 4 on the 4th end. However, Ruth & Mike piled on the pressure and won the next 4 ends to run out winners by 12-6.
