The last three club finals were decided on a sunny Sunday morning. The QRS Cup (qualifying singles) saw two new club members pitted against one another. Over the first nine ends the scores were close, with Val Wright always a shot or two ahead of Chris Squires. However Chris scored eight shots over three ends to take a 12-7 lead and then played steadily to run out 21-13 winner.
The Roy Warburton (Men's Singles) saw Captain Rod Payne playing last year's runner-up Mike Hubbard. Rod started strongly and was 7-1 up after just three ends. He continued to pile on the pressure and led 15-5 after ten ends. Mike dug deep and from 7-16 down won a run of five ends to bring the scores to 14-16. Rod recovered with a two and a single to lead 19-14, but Mike replied with a two and a four to lead 20-19. Rod was holding with a very close 'toucher' until Mike trailed the jack with his last bowl to lie three. Rod played onto the shot bowl but was unlucky to only move it a little and leave Mike holding the single he needed.
In the Frank Richards Cup (Ladies Singles) defending champion Kath Matthews took on our current "star" lady - Worcestershire County Champion Sheila Simcoe. Sheila opened strongly and led 10-1 after seven ends. However Kath then found her form and a four and a single reduced the deficit. After 13 ends the scores were level at 12-12. Kath drew ahead with a single and a two and the ladies then played out some extremely close ends with Kath just having the edge and eventually winning 21-15.
Following the completion of the matches the trophies were presented by President Ruth Lowe, after which "President's and Captain's Day" moved into full swing. First members competed in a 'spider' for a bottle of whisky, won by Thelma Stanley. Then a hot roast beef and pork buffet with extensive salads and VERY naughty trifles and other desserts was enjoyed. The merriment continued with "crazy bowling" - around an obstacle course in the manner of crazy golf. Keith Chaney proved the most adept at avoiding the hazards to win the prize bottle. Finally the members were entertained with live music from the "Eccoustics", a four-piece accoustic band counting club competition secretary Quentin Smith amongst its members.
The weather stayed beautiful throughout the second day and the charity spider, tombola and other activities raised well over £200 for the President's and Captain's chosen charity - MacMillan Nurses.
