Finals Day of the Worcestershire Bowling Association Ladies competitions was held at Broadway BC on Saturday 25th July. Six finals were played on the day and this busy schedule of events meant an early start for the ladies of Lilleshall. Play in the Inter-Club double rinks final between St.Dunstans and Lilleshall commenced at 10:00 am. Lilleshall’s team on the day was Frances Hill, Ros England, Kath Matthews, Thelma Stanley, Joan Jones, Liz Caird, Ruth Lowe and Sheila Simcoe (Marion Cutmore having played in the first round match). The team suffered heartbreak in last year's final when they lost by just one shot. All players were determined to put that behind them and use the experience to their advantage.
Lilleshall went into an early lead and after five ends were ahead by 13-7. At 10 ends the position was 20-14. However by the 15th end St.Dunstans were ahead by just 1, 22-23. At the conclusion of the penultimate end Lilleshall had fought back to be in the lead by a single shot. The last end was tense but good play, including a fine running bowl from Kath Matthews to ditch the jack, ensured both rinks picked up shots and the final victory was secured – 35-30.
After a short break for lunch Sheila Simcoe then played again, defending her WBA Ladies 4 Wood Singles title. Her opponent was England international Sue Davies, who was playing on her home green – she is a member of the Broadway club. This was a very tight game, resulting in a 21-18 victory for Sheila. Both players will represent Worcestershire at the National Championships to be held at Leamington, starting on 1st August. (Photos & match report: Mike & Liz Caird)
