Caird Cup – Frances Hill v Paul Mitchell – winner Frances Hill, score, in sets, 7-7, 10-9
This competition is played over 2 sets, both of 10 ends with 3 extra ends played if necessary to decide the winner. The first was a very close affair, with only one or two shots scored each end. At the 10th end the score was 7 shots all so each player had half a point. The second set was therefore likely to be the decider. In the second set Paul Mitchell got off to an early lead which he maintained and at the end of the 9th end the score was Paul Mitchell 9 shots Frances Hill 6 shots. The advantage was all Paul’s and all the pressure was on Frances - Frances would need to win the end by three shots to take the match into the three extra ends and would need all four shots to win the match. To the amazement of the crowd this is exactly what she did !
Davies Cup – Veterans’ Singles – Sheila Simcoe v Frank Beasland – winner Sheila Simcoe, score 21-11
Sheila Simcoe took on the current champion Frank Beasland. Sheila went into an early 5-shot lead but Frank fought back and after 11 ends the score was 11-11. However Sheila found a run of amazing form, taking 3-3-4 in the next three ends to win 21-11.
Tarmac Cup – Open Handicap - Singles Paul Mitchell v Chris Squires – winner Paul Mitchell, score 21-20
Chris started with a three-shot benefit from the handicaps in this close game. The lead changed hands regularly during the 24 ends played and after 23 ends the score was 20-20 (to the delight of the Competition Secretary who set the handicaps!). Paul set the jack and then, with his opening bowl, ditched the jack and followed in with his 'toucher' for an unbeatable position.
Nuway Cup – Open Singles - Frances Hill v Rod Payne – winner Frances Hill, score 21-16
Frances's second match of the day was closely fought, and after the 19th end Rod led by 1 shot. Frances then scored six unanswered shots over the next three ends to win 21-16.
