Eight members competed for the re-arranged Matthew's Salver Men's Drawn Pairs Competition. A late withdrawal was in danger of leaving Competition Secretary Mike Caird with a prime number of competitors - hardly the best for a pairs competition - but luckily Captain Sheila was available and "manfully" stood in!
The format was three games of 10 ends of 3-wood pairs, scored using the "Extreme Bowls" system. This rewards the shot bowl after the leads have bowled with three points, four points for the shot bowl and two points for the second bowl at completion of the end plus bonus points to each player for each of their "touchers".
The pairs were re-drawn after each game and competitors kept individual scorecards, the winners being the two overall highest scorers. Almost inevitably, because of the amusement it will cause, top man proved to be Captain Sheila with a few over 170 points. In second place, and therefore "joint-winner", was Alan Harvey with 153. Geoff Ward and Quentin Smith were close behind on 151 and 150 respectively.
Sheila thus has the unique distinction of winning both the Ladies and Men's Plates in the same year!
