Around 16 athletes and coaches from Archery GB's paralympic squad visited the club on Monday 11 August to try their hand at bowls. With ditches and gravel paths making access to the green difficult for wheelchairs we moved to the former tennis courts which, though a bit uneven, bowled at quite a reasonable pace.
After a couple of 'trial ends' the group divided into four teams and played 14 ends of a 'yardstick' format - one point for for each bowl within 2 meters, 2 points if within 1 yard (yes we did mix units - that was the length of sticks available) and a bonus point for a 'toucher'. As might be expected, the group had great balance and hand/eye coordination and they were soon peppering the jacks. While intended to be just for fun, these are international athletes and their competitive nature soon showed with much cheering for good shots and good-natured banter with the other teams!
On completion of the competition the group retired to the clubhouse where drinks and cakes (which we were assured were perfectly acceptable in an elite athlete's diet) were available. There is now talk of a return 'match' for Lilleshall bowlers to try archery!
