Over twenty members turned out in beautiful weather to contest the first club competition of the season - the 'yardstick' for the Valerie Smith Memorial Trophy. Writing from Australia on Facebook former member Colin Smith expressed delight that the competition was still running in memory of his wife.
The format was six ends of four bowls on each of three different rinks. The target was an uncentered jack and every bowl within a yard, as measured using the official stick, scored a point. In addition a point was awarded to the shot bowl on each end.
For the ladies, Sheila Payne finished third, Ruth Lowe second and the winner, with a very impressive score of 48, was Theresa Hancock. The gentlemen's competition was closer with Chris Sherriff third (37), Colin Meadows second (39) and winner, by just a single point, was Quentin Smith (no relation). It was Theresa's second win in the competition, and Quentin's fifth.
Captain Sheila thanked new Competition Secretary Clive Kimberley for his work organising the competition, which ran very smoothly, and for providing ice lollies for all the competitiors!
